Blues Guitar Riffs

Busting out some great blues guitar riffs is probably my favorite thing to do when I’m jamming. There really is nothing like having your amp cranked up to 11,  playing the riff to Mannish Boy over a super loud backing track! Now, I know you’re probably super eager to grab some tab and start jamming but before we go any further I just want to make sure you take in this one tip. Something I always tell my guitar students is this…

“You must always have an UNDERSTANDING of everything you learn.”

Truly, if there’s one piece of advice I could give to any guitar player it’s this. Just learning blues guitar riffs, licks and solos on their own is all good fun, but without checking under the hood and learning how and why they work you’ll be wasting a lot of time. Okay guys, did you learn the first shape from the last post? If you didn’t scroll down and check it out right now, if you did well done! We can now move on in our quest for blues guitar riffs mastery
So last time, we learned about the ‘minor pentatonic scale,’ again, if you want to become a blues guitar riffs master then you absolutely have to start from there and work your way up, otherwise you won’t know what you’re doing.
Ok, so now you have your minor pentatonic scale, what’s the next step? well we can quickly and easily develop that pattern into the BLUES SCALE! All you need to do is add 1 note to the pattern and you can both play and understand a huge amount of blues guitar riffs! SIMPLE!
All you need to do is count 1 string up then 1 fret up from the first note of the pattern and that’s the note to add. It’s widely know as ‘the blue note’ (a key element in many blues guitar riffs) and if you add it to your pentatonic shape you’ll notice you have a much bluesier flavor than you did before. Check out this diagram to see the pattern…

Now, notice how the note shows up twice in the pattern? They’re both the same note, not two separate notes, so make sure you work out what note it actually is (If you’re playing in E, the blue note is an Bb) and you’ll be able to work it into all your other patterns as well! This little piece of knowledge alone will open up a whole new world in understand and performing blues guitar riffs, so make sure you take this stuff on board.
